Maeve comes into the world as a member of The Mother Collective, a Vermont-based cult that has a fanatical view of motherhood. She and her older cousin Andrea have a tight connection and have agreed to always be together. Maeve notices unusual sounds coming from a room that is locked in their house. Her curiosity gets the best of her. Once she finds out what the mothers have hidden in the room, she flees the community with the boy, who is the only male child. Maeve and Andrea rekindled their relationship after matching on a DNA website years later. New York has been home to both women. Despite Maeve's financial difficulties as a book editor, Andrea has amassed a fortune in the tech and fertility industry. It might be too late for Maeve to leave once she finds out more about Andrea's business and true interests!
The cult aspect was well-executed. There's a constant feeling of impending doom. The atmosphere was well-crafted, making it impossible for me to stop reading. The frenetic pace had me on edge, needing to know what happened next.
I thoroughly enjoyed Just Like Mother. It’s a very creepy and dark read. The quick tempo and surprise ending of Just Like Mother make it a book you have to read. Fans of mystery/thriller/horror books, especially that delves in the occult. This one's for you! Thanks to the publisher for providing me a copy for an honest review.
About the Author
In addition to Just Like Mother, I have written and ghostwritten nearly a dozen other books for people of all ages (many under pseudonyms). I moved to New York City in 2006 to enter an MFA program at The New School, and from there got my first job in publishing, at a literary agency.
Now, in addition to writing books, I work as an editorial director at Abrams Books, where I specialise in entertainment publishing and content development in the children's division. I recently relocated from Brooklyn to an old house in the Hudson Valley with my partner (he is also a horror writer!) and our hyperactive cattle dog.
