Will Carver is an absolute auto-buy author for me, so I was thrilled to get a copy of ‘Upstairs at the Beresford’. 'The Beresford' book continues the stories of its residents and the building itself, but it takes place before chronologically. I wanted the story to continue; I could have read endlessly about what was happening.
The Beresford is situated outside the city limits. There's no specific city in mind. All are invited to stay in one of our rooms. Carol, the manager, won't refuse you, but she will be aware of everything about you. She'll know if you sold your soul for self-gain or to protect someone. The number of years Carol has been at The Beresford is beyond her memory. She's skilled at maintaining order and handling messy situations, sometimes even making them reappear.
The combination of characters was something I really liked. Will Carver's characters, such as Odie, Danielle, Carol, and Mr Balliol, represent a wide range of traits, making it possible to find similarities with people you know. Admittedly, they may not have been the most interesting personalities, but it hooked me on their stories. The author's skillful narrative style takes us on a journey through their alternating perspectives, allowing us to witness the extremes of their lives.
Will Carver's novels are always quirky and thought-provoking, and this one is no exception. I highly recommend it.
Many thanks to Will for writing this amazing story and to Orenda Books, Random Things Tours & Anne Carter for a spot on the tour.
